The History of Meehan, Meehan & Gavin
The firm was founded in 1961 when Richard Meehan Sr. passed the Bar examination and left his 14 year career as a Bridgeport Police Officer to ultimately become one of the State’s premier criminal defense attorneys. “Dick” Meehan, as he was known to his friends, embodied the true American dream. Orphaned at the age of 14, he was the son of a policeman. His dad died when he was only 8 years old, and cancer claimed his mother six years later. After distinguished service in the Second World War he returned to Connecticut and followed the family tradition, joining his brother, Albert, and his brother-in-law, Jim Fitzgerald on the Bridgeport Police Department.
For nine years he attended night school following his dream, first graduating from the University of Bridgeport and then commuting for four long years to the night school at UCONN law in Hartford. He was the first police officer in the State’s history to become a lawyer. After opening his own practice, he was eventually appointed as the part time Public Defender for the Circuit Court in Bridgeport, and ultimately became the Chief Public Defender for the state. He returned to private practice and was joined in 1975 by Richard Jr The firm became known as Meehan & Meehan.
His pursuit of the American dream was furthered when he was appointed as a Judge of the Superior Court on May 5, 1980. Judge Meehan missed the challenge of the courtroom as an advocate and in 1982 returned to practice.
In 1996 he was further blessed when his first grandson, Michael T. Meehan, passed the Bar and joined the firm, marking the firm with the distinction of being the only law firm in the State with three active generations at that time. He remained active until shortly before his death in 2002.
Edward J. Gavin has followed the Meehan & Meehan tradition of legal excellence since joining the firm in 1990. In 1996 Ed became a name partner and the firm was reborn as Meehan, Meehan & Gavin, LLP.
